Scientist's death sparks warning

29 August 2008 - 16:09

There should be a greater awareness of the danger of alcohol among boat users following the drowning of a scientific officer, a sheriff has said.

The warning came in the findings of a fatal accident inquiry into the death of Alison Fry, 43, from East Kilbride.

She died after falling into Mallaig harbour two years ago.

The scientist with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa), was returning to a survey vessel after a night out.

Rescue bid

The inquiry heard she was almost four times the drink-drive limit.

Sheriff Desmond Leslie said it was a tragic accident, but called for greater public awareness of the dangers of alcohol when working on boats.

Coastguards, a lifeboat crew and police were called to the scene in February 2006.

A male companion who dived in to rescue her was treated for hypothermia.
